King's best! Meet John Coffey, a huge man with the mind of a child condemned to walk "the green mile" for a horrific crime. "The green mile" is the hallway that leads to the electric chair, nicknamed Ol' Sparky by the guards. Narrating the tale after the fact is Paul Edgecombe, a prison guard who worked at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary for many years and is now relating Coffey's story. Exactly what kind of man is John Coffey and is he guilty of the crime as charged? King takes a different approach with this book—none of his usual bloody horror scenes, just superb characterization and an outstanding storyline. A new spin on the ol' "Cat in the Hat." This time it's in Latin. The translators have done a great job of preserving the rhythm and meter of the original so kids will love the sound of the words, and for those learning Latin, the book provides a welcome respite from the classics. Don't expect an easy read—it's challenging—but it's great fund to read. Read it out loud for even more fun. A Spanish version is also available. ~ Barbara Quanbeck

A must-read for any woman having a feminist bone in her body, and for anyone else, male or female, as well. Easy to read from cover to cover or just pick and choose. Over 1130 pages of fascinating reading. If you are intrigued by myth, symbols, and word origins, you will refer to Walker's book on a regular basis. Be prepared for a non-patriarchal view of our history—and to do a little research on your own to make sure she's not leading you astray. Walker also wrote "The Crone," which I also highly recommend. ~ Barbara Quanbeck
